Online Lecture

We are pleased to announce our second online lecture, with guest speaker Dr. Rika Lee (Chuo University, Japan), the author of the new book entitled What is the “Chōsen-Seki”?  Dialogue through Transnational Perspectives [Chōsen-Seki towa nanika—Transnational no shitenkara] (Akashi-Shoten, 2021). In the introduction of the book, Dr. Lee begins with the following statement:

Chōsen-seki is not a nationality. The term is often used as if it meant the nationality of Democratic People's Republic of Korea (or North Korea), but it is wrong. Chosen-Seki is a category constructed by postwar Japan in order to classify ethnic Koreans who had ‘immigrated’ to Japan during Japan’s imperial period, and their decedents (hereafter, “Zainichi-Koreans”).

In this online lecture, Dr. Lee will give us a talk about the history and experience of ethnic Koreans who are categorized as Chōsen-seki, the very minority even within the Zainichi-Korean community. We invite participants to think about what constitutes a “nation,” “nationality” and “identity” through reflecting their own experience, and exchanging dialogues with Dr. Lee and other participants through transnational perspectives.

The lecture will be given in Japanese. However, we will open up Q & A session both in English and Japanese with interpreters.
